How To Use A DUNS Number To Unlock Business Credit Lines

What a DUNS is, the free five-minute registration flow, how it feeds Paydex, and the trade-line sequence that compounds a D&B profile from zero. The order matters. The patience matters more.

A D-U-N-S Number is a commercial identifier, not a score or approval credential. Review the provider’s current application process and keep entity information consistent across business records.

This pillar walks the four-section arc every Town Mayor Financial client runs to register a DUNS and let it compound the Paydex. Section one sets up what a DUNS number actually is and why D&B issues it for free. Section two covers the five-minute registration flow founders run on day one. Section three walks how the DUNS feeds the Paydex and why vendor reports are the fastest movers on the file. Section four closes with the trade-line sequence that compounds a D&B profile from zero. Read it end to end, or jump to the section that matches where your entity is today.

Section 1 — What a DUNS number actually is (and why D&B issues it for free)

A DUNS number is a nine-digit commercial identifier assigned by Dun & Bradstreet. It is not a credit score, not a tax id — it is the persistent identifier D&B writes on every business credit file it touches, and the same identifier every lender that pulls D&B uses to find that file. Pull the EIN first, pull the DUNS immediately after, and the two numbers sit on the same record before any vendor or lender evaluates it.

D&B issues the DUNS for free because D&B wants your file in the system before any other bureau writes it. A founder who skips the registration shows up on D&B’s radar as an unassigned identifier, and the next lender that pulls gets a blank return. Five minutes on the free D-U-N-S Number registration, and the file exists with name, address, phone, EIN, and a starter Paydex before the first vendor application lands.

Free DUNS Readiness Score — where your file stands

Ten questions, three minutes. We read your current entity age, your existing D&B file presence, and your vendor footprint, then return a personalised readiness score plus a 3-step plan for which section of this pillar to start on. No email gate. The score tells you exactly where the DUNS sits in your file.

Section 2 — How to register for a DUNS number, the free five-minute flow

The registration runs on Dun & Bradstreet’s website. The form takes entity name, entity address, entity phone, entity EIN, and an entity contact — never a personal home address, a personal phone, or an SSN. Submit it from the entity inbox, the entity phone, the entity address. D&B emails the DUNS to that inbox inside of two business days at no cost.

The thing founders miss is that the form fields are also the seed data for the Paydex. Name, address, phone, EIN, ownership structure, NAICS code — D&B writes them to the file the moment the DUNS issues. Submit with the same separation the EIN-only trade lines require and the file starts clean. Submit it from a personal mailbox with a personal home address as the operating address, and the same file gets routed to a personal pull the first time a lender looks.

The EIN Credit Path — Pull, Anchor, Stack

A guide to reviewing the EIN, D-U-N-S record, and vendor-reporting footprint. An identifier does not guarantee a bureau score, lender match, approval, amount, rate, or term.

Section 3 — How the DUNS feeds the Paydex (D&B’s 0-to-100 score)

Paydex is the credit score Dun & Bradstreet runs on a zero-to-one-hundred scale, calculated almost entirely from supplier payment reports. Open three revolving net-30 vendor trade lines, pay them on time every month for two reporting cycles, and the Paydex climbs into the 70s to low 80s, regardless of revenue bracket or personal credit.

The DUNS is the address the report gets written to. When D&B receives a payment report from Uline or Quill, it writes the report against the DUNS on file. With a registered DUNS, the report lands on a real file and the Paydex moves the cycle after. Without one, the report bounces against an unassigned identifier and the Paydex never moves at all. Register the DUNS first, open the vendors second, and the compounding starts the day the first report fires.

Section 4 — The trade-line sequence that compounds a D&B profile

If you review vendor options such as Uline, Quill, or Grainger, confirm current application, reporting, payment, and eligibility requirements directly. Opening accounts or paying on time does not guarantee a Paydex score or funding outcome.

Beyond the standard three, two more net-30 vendors sit at the same tier. Crown Office Supplies opens on EIN file thickness for office-supply-heavy entities. AmSquare approves shipping-heavy entities on the same file plus a verifiable operating address. After those five, fuel-card and shipping-finance accounts open net-30 on D&B file presence for entities with active flow. Each new line opened in order reports the payment to D&B and lifts the Paydex. The graduation step is Lendavo: read the now-thick D&B file against the closing-history of the lenders in our network, and surface the capital products that close for a Paydex 70-to-80 band profile. The DUNS was the seed. The trade lines are the compounding. The patience matters more than the speed.

Pillar Resource
Lendavo — turn the D&B file into capital

Curated intros, not mass-market offers. Lendavo reads the D&B file and surfaces the capital products that close for a profile in the Paydex 70-to-80 band, in the order they should be hit. Use it once the revolving trade lines have reported clean — every avoided hard pull is one more approval runway for later. The DUNS built the file. Lendavo turns it into capital.
